Well, Alex, you did an amazing job of making a virtual mountain out of a literal mole hill and convincing the ignorant that an absolutely harmless log file is in reality some big, bad cybermonster.
The Truth of the Matter:
NPETraceSession.etl is NOT a “is High Risk Trojan”. It is NOT “Malware” by any stretch of the imagination. There is nothing threatening about the file, except maybe to malware and rootkits that are detected and removed by Norton Power Eraser. NPETraceSession.etl is a log file generated by Norton
Power Eraser.
If the file is on a user’s computer, it means that the user has used Norton Security or the stand-alone version of Norton Power Eraser.
There is NO NEED for immediate removal.
It CANNOT be “used for stealing bank information and users passwords”.
It CANNOT “download malicious software from hacker’s web sites”.
It CANNOT “allow someone to connect to your computer remotely”.
It IS a HARMLESS log file.
If a person has run Norton Security or the stand-alone version of Norton Power Eraser, that person will have, in his or her root drive (C:) a folder named “NPE”, and inside that folder will be the file
“NPETraceSession.etl”. It is a log file of Norton Power Eraser’s processes on that computer. The size of the file is approximately 320 KB, and it can be opened with Notepad or similar text reader.
NPETraceSession.etl
is NOT a threat. The threat is people who feel that they have to resort to scare tactics in order to hawk useless software.
